The Shared Scholarship Scheme is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the United Kingdom, to study the MSc Responsible Tourism Management (contact Jo Jagger)
Eligibility Criteria
In order to be considered for the scholarship applicants should:
- be nationals of (or permanently domiciled in) a Commonwealth developing country*, and not currently be living or studying in a developed country
- hold a first degree at either first or upper second class level;
- be sufficiently fluent in English to pursue the course
- have not previously studied for one year or more in a developed country
- not be employed by a government department (at national level) or a parastatal organisation (employees of universities are normally acceptable, however)
- be able to confirm in writing that neither they or their families would otherwise be able to pay for the proposed course of study
- be willing to confirm that they will return to their home country as soon as their period of study is complete

What is covered by the Scholarship?
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and participating institutions will jointly meet the full costs of an award holder’s study in the UK. In addition to tuition fees, award holders are entitled to air fares to and from the UK, a maintenance allowance, a thesis grant, a study travel grant (if applicable) and an excess baggage allowance for accompanied books up to 10kg on return home.
No additional allowances are paid for spouses or other dependants.
Application Process
Anyone wishing to be considered for a scholarship must hold an unconditional offer of a place onto one of the above participating programmes. Eligible candidates will be identified and considered automatically. The institution will short list a number of candidates, who will be invited to complete an application for the scholarship
Applications should be returned to the institution, who will forward their nominations to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for its agreement.
Applicants may apply for the scholarship prior to internal short listing.
Leeds Met aims to advise candidates of the result of their application no later than July.
Deadlines
Applications should be submitted to Leeds Met no later than 30 April 2010, in order for the University to forward its nominations to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission no later than 31 May 2010.
